Think Simple

It really is the little things that make people happy.
Over the weekend I taught two different Envirotex Lite resin classes at Mixed Minded.  For weeks I contemplated the class kits.  I selected items that could be glazed and other items for the bezel related class.  My kits were all lovingly packed up in the hopes that each student would enjoy the items I had selected for them to work on.
Then I packed the tool kits.  Plastic measuring cups, tooth picks, stir sticks & wax paper are all needed.  These are all the throw away items. But wouldn't you know it, one of my students even turned the stir stick into a usable surface!  She covered her stick with a small piece of napkin and used resin as a glaze on the first side.  She plans to use this as a bookmark when both sides dry.  Brilliant!

The First Mixed Minded Weekend is Over

It is so hard to go back your everyday routine after a great art retreat!
Mixed Minded 2011 is now over - and a few of us are already brainstorming about Mixed Minded 2012!
I taught two great resin classes which I posted about on the Resin Crafts blog.
But I also had two wonderful felting classes.  My students created the most amazing beads and brooches!  As always, I learned a few new stitches and techniques and was inspired by some twists in my design that the students did on their own.  Everyone was very generous with their extra supplies and ideas!
So today I send out a special salute to Karen Ellis at The Art House Studio and her volunteers for a fantastic weekend of teaching!

Stopping For a Sunrise

I never get tired of looking at horses.  I think if I had this miniature horse he would have to live in my studio.
These are just a few of the gifted animals that work at Sunrise, my favorite charity.
Sunrise is on a beautiful farm about an hour west of Toronto.  It was on my way to the Mixed Minded retreat in Kitchener, Ontario so I stopped by.
Every year I gather up boxes of supplies for the children's summer camp.  Knowing that kids are doing arts and crafts is such a happy thought.  My boxes included googly eyes, felt, beads, construction paper, glitter, feathers and all sorts of items that make for a children's craft project.
Wouldn't it be great to be going to camp this summer?

The Acorn Ring

Earlier this spring my hubby found this perfect set of acorns.  Receiving them was better than six dozen roses!!  I was so excited to do something special with them.
In order to make them stronger I brushed Envirotex Lite resin over them twice.
Then I pulled out a special product known as epoxy clay.  Epoxy clay, like Envirotex Lite resin is a one to one mix ratio.  Once you mix the two parts it becomes a very soft clay.  You have about three hours to work with it.  Then it air-dries rock solid!  I placed some clay in this cabochon ring.  My idea was to have the acorns sitting up in this black clay.
Then I had a happy accident.  While attempting to smooth out one section of the clay base, I reached for this tiny plastic spoon on my table.  I didn't check it and some of this green powder (Luminarte) was still clinging to the spoon base.  It made a green mark on the clay.
I actually love the green....so I applied green Luminarte powder to all the black clay.
Now my acorns look like they are sitting on a grassy knoll!  I can't wait to wear this ring!

Remixed Media DVD with Candie Cooper

With it being a holiday weekend in Canada (we have Monday off) I turned to my stash of items I set aside for when I am not busy.  For the last two weeks I have looked longingly at a DVD sitting right on top of my pile of books and magazines.  Candie Cooper has a new DVD dedicated to teaching you how to work with wood and acrylic to create custom jewelery.  Wood and acrylic are so inexpensive that you don't have to stress about making mistakes...and in fact, mistakes can result in some really fun pieces of jewelery.
The bracelet that is on the cover of the DVD highlights quite a few of the techniques Candie teaches you in the DVD workshop.  I am hoping to head out to Michaels craft store today to pick up a little wood to work with.  I have never created a collage on wood.  After watching this video I can see how amazing it would be to create a wood collage that could be cut down into smaller pieces which can then be incorporated into bracelets and one of a kind pendants.
Candie's chapter on filing and finishing taught me that there are a lot of dremel attachments I could be using to speed up my work.  After seeing how she uses a stone setting tip to add a crystal to a thick piece of acrylic I went rummaging through my dremel box to see if I already own the tip....I do, and it is still snuggled in the box unused.  Can't wait to try this technique!
This DVD is the perfect weekend workshop.  I already have everything I need to get started on a new project accept for the wood.  I am excited to start something new inspired by Candie's tips and techniques.

Helene White's Artist Legacy

The art world became a little dimmer with the passing of painter and miniature artist Helene White this spring.  I did not have the opportunity to meet Mrs White but I knew from stories told to me by her son and daughter in law that she was a wild flower painter (documenting and preserving through her paintings many of Western Canada's flowers) and well known in the miniature art world.  I imagine we would have had a lot to talk about.  With her passing came the packing up of her art supplies.  I was honored to be gifted with many of these items.  This is just a small selection from the three boxes that were given to me.
Many of you would understand how amazing this collection is.  We mixed media types see and feel so much when our hands touch original artifacts.  Mrs. White's supplies were saved in so many unique containers and bags.  She was a person who saw the value in keeping small things that would be inconsequential to most people.  In one small bag I found this small hat stand and a miniature hat.  There were hats ready to be completed and a small pattern with instructions.
I found teeny tiny basket making supplies.  This stash was set aside to create what would have been a miniature sewing basket.  Look at all the miniature fat quarters she prepared.
In this classic Kraft cheese carton is a collection of feathers.  There is no doubt in my mind that she collected these herself.  Perhaps on days she sketched or painted flowers.  I understand that her husband accompanied her on some of these trips to ensure that she would not be attacked by Canadian wildlife as she measured and sketched flowers in the wild.
A sewing kit and tiny bias tape.  I love the thread carefully collected on the spiral shaped thread savers.  When was the last time you saved a small piece of thread?
There were many pieces of fabric.  They all have small patterns making them perfect for a miniature artist.  I found this hand stitched pleated section and a miniature quilt in progress.
Other containers have buttons, interesting yarn snippets, and some dried petals.
I found some very tiny cross stitching.  One inch or smaller.  This fine detail work must be preserved.  I love the tiny design in the hoop, needle still attached as though she would be picking up the project to complete soon.
I hummed and mumbled to myself as I opened every box and bag.  In the yellow box (which originally contained bullets) a lovely collection of silk ribbons.
This is a pattern and sample for a miniature Christmas stocking.  It even has miniature candies.
And finally the simple plastic cup that held the item that brought a tear to my eye.  Simple and stunning tiny pink flowers.  I have searched for months to find tiny flowers for a project idea I have.  I could not find what I visualized for my idea.  And then here they were.
I think you all know that I will do something special with this gift.
For now.  Just having had a chance to see and touch everything is enough.
Thank you Michael and Kay White.  Thank you for trusting me with this legacy.

Shrinky Dink Meets Fairyopolis

I have a new bracelet!  It is made using good old fashioned Shrinky Dink.
Shrinky Dink has been around for a very long time.  It is a plastic that shrinks when it is heated.  What is relatively new about it, is that they have Shrinky Dink for Ink Jet printers. I bought mine at Michael's Craft store.
The project began with me picking six images from the Fairyopolis triple disk CD.  I printed this page right onto the shrinky dink.
Then I cut my images out.  They were roughly four inches tall to start.  After "shrinking" they are about 1 1/2 inches tall and nine times as thick as the original plastic sheet I started with.
I also measured the location to punch holes on each piece.  These holes are 1/8 size right now, but when shrunk, my jump rings barely fit through the tiny holes.  Now they were all ready to be heated.
You need to follow the manufacturer's instructions for baking.  This is hard to watch.  In the oven you see these pieces moving and curling.
Eventually they are shrunk.  I pull them out of the oven and press a piece of tile down on the tiny shrunk plastic to make sure they harden flat.
All I had left to do was spend a little time joining all my fairies with jump rings.
The bracelet is so unique and fun.
I'll be doing more with shrink plastic this weekend!

Provence Vision Board

There is a shocking pink addition to my studio this week.
I have a new bulletin board featuring items that will remind me of Provence.  I can't wait to return to this region of France.   I will have to wait at least a year, so this board will be something I can look to when I day dream about it.
The bulletin board has some of the post cards I picked up this year, some lavender in sachets, an angel piece and a special paint palette.
This palette is completely protected under a layer of Envirotex Lite resin.  The board is already making me smile and there is no doubt I will see some of these scenes in person one day in the future.

Ruffled Edges

I had a chance to finish these two little cards last night.  They feature artwork from the Fairyopolis card making kit.
I made these buttons out of the instruction sheet that came in the kit!
I want to use every inch of the paper supplied.
The card bodies are already beautiful.  I cut 1/2 inch from the front of the card body and sewed the ruffle and ribbon in place.

It was very difficult to see this necklace against the wild patterns of the dresses in the store window.  I do want to make a bird cage necklace!  I don't think I have a cage big enough for flowers, but I do have a cage!
