The Lamp and Crafty Links

A few weeks ago I spotted a women pulling this beautiful lamp out of her van at the antique market.  She gave me a great price...but hesitated actually giving it to me.  She really liked it too!  I am so glad I got it.  I have never seen anything like it.  The attached plate is perfect for potpourri!  I would put candy there...but then the dish would always be empty.
Now that I have had the lamp for two weeks I have given some more thought to the plate.  I wonder if it was an ashtray?

T-Shirt Yarn Corsage Bracelet

It has been great testing and experimenting with t-shirt yarn.  This corsage on velvet is a great example of how soft and light t-shirt yarn can be.
 It really does curl beautifully!
I wish you could see this in person.
It really is pretty!

Black T-Shirt To Tarn Necklace

This is project three in my series experimenting with recycling t-shirts.
This black rose and necklace was easy to make.
T-shirt fabric into yarn = Tarn.  I showed you how to do this in my first post about this recycling technique.
For this flower I decided to stitch the flower first.
Then I attached a felt back with glue.

T-shirt to Yarn - Tarn Brooch

I am experimenting with the various ways I can add "tarn" to my projects.
Yesterday I showed you how I made these ball of tarn.  I don't imagine any of my t-shirts will be going to the Good Will any time soon.
I simply glued the tarn into this circular flower shape.  I really liked the result...but was bothered by the bits of glue I could see.  I used a clear drying glue, but it is still visible when sitting on fabric.

So I sewed some beads to camouflage these areas.  I really like the brooch now!

Tarn - Have You Made Some?

This necklace features braided tarn.  What is tarn you ask?
T-shirt fabric stretched into yarn = Tarn.
This long weekend will be remembered for the tarn making blisters my Mom and I both have.  Now I know what it must have been like to spin your own wool.
You need really great scissors (Westcott is my brand) to cut t-shirts into strips.  To save time I was cutting through four peices of t-shirt fabric and needed a super titanium blade.
The technique is perfectly illustrated in this 1979 book called Rags: Making a Little Something Out of Almost Nothing, written by sisters Linda and Stella Allison.  The chawed rosin blogger had a great link explaining how to make a rag rug with old t-shirts.  I am so glad I saw this post.  My Mom and I made several balls of Tarn.  We could not believe how easy it was to stretch the fabric so it curled into itself...hence the yarn idea.  It was the constant stretching needed to make the bigger balls that caused the blisters.  I wore gloves after rolling the first ball of stretched tarn.
I have seen lots of online posts turning the tarn into flowers.
I wanted to try braiding it.
I set up my tarn so I could use the classic kumihimo braiding 8-strand technique.
Isn't it great?  More tarn ideas to come!
