The Sock Monkey Necklace

Its Thursday again! Where did the week go?
I have another fun "how-to" post for you today.
Well. Fun for me.
This post will either put me in the fun necklace hall of fame or a few of you are going to call to check if I am still okay.
Clearly I am living in my own little world.
And as we say. They know me here.
Are you seeing sock monkey's everywhere?
I am. I don't recall having them as a child. I am amazed I never made one.
But I was on this site earlier thinking that maybe I should order a pattern.
Sock monkeys are such a great example of hand sewing and recycling.
How could I resist?
Until I remembered my sock monkey fabric.
And yes, I know.
I have way too much fabric.
But this is a perfect example of me buying it thinking I might need it some day.

Isn't it the greatest fabric? There are so many different sock monkeys I couldn't decide which one I liked the best. And then I noticed. Each square was virtually the same size I needed to make a 1 1/2 inch button. Hmmmm.

I cut a template out of card stock and used it to hand cut my fabric circles.

Then I decided I might try and make a necklace. I have these "welded eyes" that have been waiting to be called into duty....so I pulled them out for my sample.

My first button turned out beautifully. But I wasn't sure how I was going to attach it to a necklace. I thought about sewing the buttons to ribbon or velvet. I also tried to use wire and jump rings...but they didn't look right. In the end, I pulled apart this inexpensive gold chain. The smaller loops were just the right size to join two buttons.

Look at how cute they are joined!!!

And isn't the final necklace a scream?
I LOVE IT!!
I wish inventing things like this was my job!
(Do jobs like that exist?)

Yes, it is the cutest ever. Thanks for sharing the steps you took to get there. To me, that is almost as interesting as the finished necklace.
While I love repurposing things, would socks work for that? My husbands socks would have a worn out face!

Carmi! This is so hilarious. My son always says that they are not going to have children, only monkeys! In my own perverted sense of humour, I keep sending them sock monkey's when I find really, really neat ones. This is so great.

The sock monkey necklace is adorable! Makes me smile!

I never had a sock monkey but I spent my preteens bugging my parents for a pet monkey. They used to have squirrel monkeys for sale at Woolworths. I spent a lot of time thinking about how wonderful it would be to have a monkey.

Please go over how you attached the monkey buttons to each other again. Thanks. What a cute idea.

The back of each button has a welded eye...the eyes lined up with the necklace I chose to use so I was able to wire everything in place.

Amazingly cute! I'd love to also see the buttons in a matching ring and pin. I just wanted to let you know I posted a link to this project in my blog.
